Robotic Surgery & Innovation For Residents: Creating A Joint Platform For Surgical Teams, Engineers, Students of Medical and Nursing Schools, 27 March 2021, Saturday



Our event that targets primarily residents in training was organised by Koç University School of Medicine Postgraduate Education Committee on 27 March 2021 and and was live broadcasted from our training center RMK AIMES (http://www.aimes.org) that is located in the same campus with Koç University Hospital. Registration was free-of-charge for this meeting. Language was English and it was also simultaneously broadcasted by the SurgicalTV.

Opening speeches were given by Prof. Dr. Şükrü Dilege (Dean of Koç University School of Medicine) and  Prof. Dr. Tarık Esen (Department of Urology, Koç University Schoo of Medicine).

Koç University School of Medicine Postgraduate Education Committee supports and plans training of the residents. Chairman of this committee is Prof. Dr. Yavuz Gürkan who chairs the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation. Prof. Gürkan gave a talk on ”Robotic surgery and anaesthesiology” during the meeting. Prof. Emre Balık, chairman of Department of General Surgery who is also a member of Postgraduate Education Committee gave a talk on ”Applications of robotic general surgery”. Prof. A. Erdem Canda from the Department of Urology who is also a member of Postgraduate Education Committee gave a talk on ”Use of other technologies during robotic surgery”. Prof. Canda also planned and constituted the scientific program of the meeting.

This online meeting was an academic collaboration of the schools of medicine, engineering and nursing. Applications of robotic urology, general surgery, gynecology, torax surgery, anesthesiology and nursing were presented by the faculty of Koç University. Faculty of the engineering faculty of Koç University gave talks on robotic technologies and many attractive subjects. Prof. Çağatay Başdoğan from the Department of Engineering gave a talk on ”Medical robotic systems and simulation” and Dr. Savaş Taşoğlu gave a talk on ”3D printing for tissue scaffolds” that attracted great attention.

Prof. Serhan Tanju, chairman of Department of Thorax Surgery gave a talk on ”Robotic surgery applications of thoraric diseases”, Prof. Çağatay Taşkıran, chairman of Department of Gynecology gave a talk on ”Robotic surgery applications of gynecologic diseases” and Prof. Yakup Kordan, chairman of Department of Urology gave a talk on ”Robotic surgery applications of urologic diseases”,

Prof. Sevilay Şenol Çelik from the Department of Nursing gave a talk on ”Robotic surgery & Nursing”.

We also had international speakers including Dr. Stefano Puliatti (Belgium), Dr. Christian Wagner (Germany) and Miss Anna Mohammed (London). Dr. Puliatti who is the Deputy Chairman of ORSI Academy in Belgium one of the largest robotic surgery training centers in the world gave a talk on robotic surgery training facilities in their center. Dr. Wagner gave a talk on robotic surgery training in Germany. Miss Anna Mohammed who is a board member of the European Assocation of Urological Nurses from UCLH in London gave a talk on ”The role of the robotic nurse assistant and education”.

Associate Prof Dr. Murat Hasanreisoğlu from the Department of Ophtalmology who is a board member of Koç University Research Centre For Translational Medicine (KUTTAM)  gave talks on KUTTAM and Koç University Clinical Trials Unit.

Lastly, Prof. Dr. A. Erdem Canda and Dr. Ulufer Sivrikaya who are directors of RMK AIMES gave talks about RMK AIMES and courses organised in our training center.

We had more than 450 participants from many parts of the world mostly from medical schools, engineers or nursing faculties. Live questions by the attendees were answered by the speakers during the meeting. We had participants from 40 contries including Türkiye, Italy, Morocco, Spain, Israel, Austria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, USA, Germany, Albania, Korea, Algeria, Avusturalia, Mexika, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Madagascar, Macedonia, Burma, Ireland, Tansania, Norvay, Tailand, South Africa, Qatar, Phillipines, Greece, Holland, Jordan, France, Vietnam, Egypt, Sudan, Pakistan, Paraguay, Taivan, Gana and Estonia.
